| Overview of Edirisa | |
Edirisa is a society for promoting Africa, creativity, cultures and practical skills. This international and unreligious organisation is based in Uganda. Promotion of Africa is important because of the negative image this wonderful continent has around the globe. Creativity is suppressed at Ugandan schools, and Edirisa is here to fight this reality. Cultures is purposely written in plural, as we try to learn from different world cultures and build an African culture which is respectful to tradition and enriched by positive elements from elsewhere. Practical skills are essential for Africa's and Africans' development, but normally neglected and looked down upon. (To read more, please download Why Edirisa? /2 pages, .pdf/.) Our four activity areas are: • cultural tourism • education • fair trade crafts • multimedia The organisation was born on 1 February 2001 at Uganda Martyrs University in central Uganda, next to which it now operates The Gardens of Edirisa. The other two Edirisa locations are in the southwest of the country: The Heart and The Home. Edirisa's founders were two Masters students of development issues: Miha Logar, a Slovenian journalist, and Ambrose Kibuuka, a Ugandan educator, and a group of students and staff. Today's international team is made of over 30 people, many of them volunteeers. Edirisa is modest and business-oriented. In Uganda it is registered as a company and a community based organisation. It is supported by three independent Edirisas: an association in Slovenia, a club in Germany and a charity in England.
