Edirisa means a window in the language of the Bakiga, the people of southwestern Uganda.
During the first six years of our existence we presented ourselves as 'a window for the world to see Africa, and for Africa to see the world'. Our symbol was a window with one shutter inside and one outside - this window needed to be opened both from Africa and from the rest of the world. The original slogan breathe Africa, see Africa was linked to what a window provides (air and a view), but could as well be understood as a call to Africa to open its eyes.
In 2007, Samo Acko, a Slovenian volunteer designer, prepared a new logo that showed the synergy and impact of education, crafts, ecotourism and multimedia. The black dots represented culture (people) being influenced by Edirisa' activities. The shape of the logo still evoked a window frame, and the slogan remained almost the same.
In 2015, the dots were retired.
