John Kanusu

Every New Year’s Eve there is a party on Habukomi Island, to which Edirisa invites partners and friends. Batwa from the Makanga and Rwamahano communities are naturally present as well. The first time the chairman of Rwamahano, John Kanusu, was asked to come, he was told he could bring one person with him. To our surprise he chose his mother Joseline!

Kanusu is a family man from a somewhat famous family. His aunt Tezikyi Caderess is one of the very few Pygmy people on this planet with a passport and the experience of flying in an airplane. She has been to Zambia where she represented the Batwa of Uganda.

Kanusu's father Gwanyarari Furembe is a hunter and bamboo seller with two wives. Joseline gave him 7 children but only 4 are still alive. Kanusu was her first born, in 1977.

Gwanyarari taught his son many things about Echuya Forest. They never lived within the forest though; Kanusu's grandparents were the last generation born and raised in Echuya.

What knowledge Kanusu acquired from his dad, he supplemented with what he learned from other hunters. His rich experience and cool character led to him becoming the security officer of Echuya for Nature Uganda, guarding it and preventing people from cutting wood and bamboo.

He is widely respected for what he does and who he is. He dropped out of primary school after only three months because Bakiga children (the majority ethnic group) used to abuse him. Nobody despises him anymore.

Since 2001 he has been the leader of his community, comfortably elected twice. His steady leadership may be an explanation for the difference in Rwamahano: here Batwa don’t ignore agricultural work and drunkards face it rough - they will be punished or even arrested.

He has also been a part-time tour guide for almost two decades. Since 2012 he has been leading Edirisa Canoe Trekking groups from Lake Bunyonyi through Echuya to Lake Kayumbu on the other side, and has impressed us highly. It was automatic for us to approach Kanusu when looking for a community to do something special with.

Kanusu is married to Miria, seven years his junior. He won her heart in 1995, just after his return from Mubende in central Uganda where he had been working for four years, taking care of cattle, cultivating and lumbering. He came back with stories, money and a small cassette radio that he used to play music for Miria. She liked it.

They have two children, Isaac and Prudence. All Kanusu wants for them is to get them well educated.

Kanusu is Anglican, he says, but he also believes in traditional Batwa gods.

,I love the print but I was afraid of getting it dirty since I just toss my wallet in my bag and patent leather is pretty vulnerable to permanent stains. I ended up getting the leopard insolite and I love it! I'd say go for it if you love it! lv bags.
